Skype Network Assessment Tool – could not load file or assembly

If you’re not already aware, Microsoft offers a Skype Network Assessment tool that you can use to test connectivity to Office 365.

The tool gives you an insight into how your network will perform today with Office 365 Skype for Business online. You can then use this data to reassure stakeholders that there’s enough available bandwidth, or as ammo for upgrading your internal network, or internet link.

You can download the network assessment tool here.

Whilst running the tool against one of our customer environments, I ran into an issue where the tool would crash shortly after launching, complaining of being unable to load a file or assembly:

Unhandled Exception: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly ‘Microsoft.Rtc.Internal.Media.dll’ or one of its dependencies. The specified module could not be found.

The tool would then spit out an error and close:

Within the help documentation, Visual C++ is called out as a prerequisite. What’s not mentioned, though is that you’ll need to install the 32bit version, even if you’re running the tool on a 64bit machine.

You can download Visual C++ direct from Microsoft here (be sure to select the x86 version)

Once installed, the tool will run without issue.
